By the time I’ve left Matilija Canyon I’m not sure what to expect further up the Wheeler canyon. The visitor center has survived but not the world’s smallest post office. As I continue past this area I can see that everything in this canyon has burned as well. Black hillsides are the norm.
A few miles from the saddle that leads down into the Sespe watershed and Rose Valley I come to the end of the black and the beginning of a massive fire front with flames hundreds of feet high. My stopping point for the day.
I can only imagine what it might be like on the other side of the saddle. I’ll find out today.
