It is Sunday and the night before the fire blew through the upper part of the Matilija drainage, over Murrieta Divide and down the Santa Ynez drainage past Jameson Reservoir to Juncal.
It also raced up the backside of the Santa Ynez Mountains to the crest and moved down towards eastern Carpinteria. By daylight the flames were embedded along Highway 150 and coming down the Carpinteria, Gobernador and Rincon drainages towards a number of residences.
On the west it moved across the upper part of Sutton Creek into Santa Monica Canyon and was heading towards the Toro Canyon area when the winds shifted back to the east.
Great backfiring held the west ridge of Santa Monica. Great news.
But this was tempered when I was able to drive back in to Jameson Reservoir and discover how devastating the fire had been in that area.
